Square Root Faves: East London

East London is and always has been the beating heart of Square Root. It's not only the home of our Soda Works, but also where many of our team live, eat, drink and socialise.

In this - the first of a series of recommendations from our team, we've picked out a small number of our favourite places with an E postcode! We focused on the places that have brought us the most joy, and who have always been excellent pals of Square Root over the years.

Got an East London shout that we need to hear about? Let us know and we'll see if we can't get your favourite Fizzy Pop stocked with them!

Chesham Arms

15 Mehetabel Rd, London E9 6DU

Since being saved from redevelopment into flats in 2015, This classic Hackney pub has continued to capture the hearts of East Londoners and visitors alike with it’s charm and authenticity, and is one of the Square Root gang’s favourite places to unwind. It’s easy to see why, The Chesham has got it all: a fantastic selection of beers, wines, spirits and softs, textbook cosy London pub furnishing, homely pork pies and sausage rolls (order pizzas in from nearby Yard Sale if you’re feeling particularly peckish), and best of all, a huge beer garden with multiple tables out back!

OMBRA

1 Vyner St, Cambridge Heath, London E2 9DG

This Hackney canalside joint, just a stones throw from Victoria Park, is the place to go if you, like us, are a fan of Venetian cicchetti (light snacks), mains, wines, spritz and cocktails. As well as opening for delicious sit-down Italian cuisine, OMBRA also operates in the daytime as a shop, selling fresh pasta, wine and groceries. Of course, as any good deli should be, they're well stocked with our fantastic Fizzy Pop!

Signature Brew Taproom & Venue

340 Acton Mews, Haggerston, London E8 4EA

At Square Root love nothing better than heading down to a taproom to bask in the glorious Hackney sunshine (Ok maybe not rn, but still). Our pals at Signature Brew make the most banging beers, and their taproom is one of our fave spots to drink, hang out and listen to live music in Haggerston. If you're not a beero, they've also got rad wines & spirits and some sweet softies from yours truly!

BRAT

374 Helmsley Place Hackney E8 3SB

Taking (now permanent!) residency at Climpson's Arch courtyard, BRAT restaurant is a fantastic choice of venue for a celebration! A vast array of fancy AF dishes are prepared daily using the finest sustainably caught meat and fish. Highlights include roasted Game rice, whole Crab with hay butter, grilled mushrooms and wood fired breads. And that's before you even get to the incredible wine list…

Thankfully, the Courtyard comes covered with a marquee – which is dead handy given the unreliable British weather!

Nude Coffee

25 Hanbury St, Spitalfields, London E1 6QR

We're big coffee drinkers here at Square Root, and have been known to plough through a bag or more a week at our Leyton HQ. When out and about in Hackney, one of our sales team's caffeine spots of choice is Nude Coffee, just off Spitalfields Market. They buy as much of their coffee as they can directly from growers, and rotate their selection to ensure they've always got the freshest beans to work with. Throw a seven day brunch menu into the mix, and it's no wonder Chris wants to have all his meetings there!

Stone Mini Market

743 High Rd Leytonstone, Leytonstone, London E11 4QS

A little way out from the hustle and bustle of Hackney, but closer to our Waltham Forest home, is this gem of a bottleshop in Leytonstone.

Run by Adrienne and Okan, Stone Mini Market offers a fine selection of UK and Belgian brews, as well as doubling up as a zero waste store. They are also always fully stocked with our finest Fizzy Pop!

The Pembury Tavern

90 Amhurst Rd, London E8 1JH

A guide to East London wouldn’t be complete without the inclusion of The Pembury Tavern. This historic Hackney boozer has had new life breathed into it by our pals at Five Points Brewery, and is a firm favourite among the Soda Jerks of Square Root.

Step inside The Pembo – as it is affectionately known in London drinks industry circles – and we can pretty much guarantee you’ll fall in love within minutes. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, the beers are delicious and the pizzas truly are to die for. Our only regret about moving out of Hackney is that it’s now just that little bit further away!
